Happy are those whose transgression is
forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no
iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
While I kept silence, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
For day and night your hand was heavy upon
me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of
summer.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, "I will confess my transgressions
to the LORD,"
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Psalm 32:1-5
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned,
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are justified in your sentence
and blameless when you pass judgment.
Indeed, I was born guilty,
a sinner when my mother conceived me.
You desire truth in the inward being;
therefore teach me wisdom in my secret
heart.
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
and do not take your holy spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and sustain in me a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your
deliverance.
O LORD, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
For you have no delight in sacrifice;
if I were to give a burnt offering, you would
not be pleased.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken
spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will
not despise.
Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
then you will delight in right sacrifices,
in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.
Psalm 51
No one who conceals transgressions will
prosper,
but one who confesses and forsakes them will
obtain mercy.
Proverbs 28:13
Yet even now, says the LORD,
return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with
mourning;
rend your hearts and not your clothing.
Return to the LORD, your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast
love,
and relents from punishing.
Who knows whether he will not turn and
relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the LORD, your God?
Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sanctify a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
gather the people.
Sanctify the congregation;
assemble the aged;
gather the children,
even infants at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her canopy.
Between the vestibule and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the LORD,
weep.
Let them say, "Spare your people, O
LORD,
and do not make your heritage a mockery,
a byword among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
'Where is their God?'"
Joel 2:12-17
For if you forgive others their trespasses,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive
others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 6:14-15
Now all the tax collectors and sinners were
coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were
grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats
with them."
So he told them this parable: "Which one
of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave
the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost
until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders
and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends
and neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my
sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in
heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous
persons who need no repentance.
Luke 15;1-7
"Or what woman having ten silver coins, if
she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and
search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls
together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I
have found the coin that I had lost.' Just so, I tell you, there is
joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."
Luke 15:8-10
Then Jesus said, "There was a man who had
two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me
the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his
property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all
he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered his
property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe
famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in
need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that
country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly
have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no
one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many
of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I
am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say
to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I
am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your
hired hands." ' So he set off and went to his father. But while
he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with
compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then
the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before
you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father
said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe the best one
and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his
feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and
celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was
lost and is found!'
Luke 15:11-24
Since, then, we have a great high priest who
has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold
fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is
unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in
every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us
therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:14-16
This is the message we have heard from him and
proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at
all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking
in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the
light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If
we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is
not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will
forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we
say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not
in us.
1 John 1:5-10
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD.
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities,
LORD, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the LORD
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the LORD!
For with the LORD there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.
Psalm 130
To the LORD our God belong mercy and
forgiveness,
Daniel 9:9
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in
the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the
foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.
He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ,
according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his
glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him
we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us.
Ephesians 1:3-8
May you be made strong with all the strength
that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure
everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father,
who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the
light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred
us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption,
the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:11-14
One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with
him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and took his place at the
table. And a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having learned that
he was eating in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster jar of
ointment. She stood behind him at his feet, weeping, and began to
bathe his feet with her tears and to dry them with her hair. Then she
continued kissing his feet and anointing them with the ointment. Now
when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself,
"If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what
kind of woman this is who is touching him that she is a
sinner." Jesus spoke up and said to him, "Simon, I have
something to say to you." "Teacher," he replied,
"speak." "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed
five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay,
he canceled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love
him more?" Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he
canceled the greater debt." And Jesus said to him, "You
have judged rightly." Then turning toward the woman, he said to
Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me
no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and
dried them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I
came in she has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not anoint my
head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore,
I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she
has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves
little." Then he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven."
But those who were at the table with him began to say among
themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" And he
said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."
Luke 7:36-50
Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and
anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be
kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in
Christ has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:31-32
As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe
yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and
patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint
against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven
you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with
love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the
peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called
in the one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:12-15
The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the
Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be
forgiven.
James 5:15
