Musical NotesWe are now in the season of Lent and our music has become focused on penance and reconciliation. This penance and reconciliation is part of our lifelong process of striving to be transformed into a life of holiness as demonstrated by our Lord. The section of Evangelical Lutheran Worship featuring Lenten hymns begins with hymn No. 319 and continues through hymn 343. These hymns speak of fasting, prayer, giving, sacrifice, journeying - all actions we can participate in throughout Lent as we move toward Easter and the resurrection. The words of hymn No. 319, O Lord, throughout These Forty Days state “O Lord, throughout these forty days you prayed and kept the fast; inspire repentance for our sin, and free us from our past.” Consider using these words as your brief personal daily prayer throughout the season of Lent.— David McNease |
