Solo Dei Gloria

OUR MUSIC MINISTY

Music is a very important and traditional part of our worship and praise at the church.

From organs, piano, choirs, and handbells, we worship The Lord with music.

Our Organ
Located in the balcony is our Allen 301-3C Digital Organ.  It is a 38 Stop - Two Manual Organ.  Our Allen Organ was installed in the late 1970s and has faithfully served our congregation for over three decades.

* Alterable Voices is a feature of the organ where up to four more stops may be programed into the organ voicing, with two assigned each to the Swell and Great Organs. These stops are programmed into the organ with 1970's style computer data cards.  The stop list above details which additional stops are in our card library.

Some features of our Allen Organ include:
Expression Pedal - One Master Expression Pedal, affects all divisions.
Cresendo Pedal - One Master Crescendo, for all divisions, gradually adds stops as Pedal is opened.
Alterable Voices - Allows loading of temporary stops into the organ voicing.
Transposer - Performs the sometimes difficult task of transposing automatically, up to a maxium of five half
steps, in half step increments.

Audio System
A digita organ is only as good as the speakers in which it is played through.  Our organ is played through three sets of organ speakers.  The Main Organ sits high up in the balcony.  The Chancel Organ sits in the front of the church above the pulpit and lectern.  The Monitors are located in front of the organ, on the back walls of the church.

Additional Instruments:
Also contained in our balcony, and played from the organ console, is a rank of chimes located on the south wall of the choir loft.  Our organist can accompany his work with the chimes from the Swell Organ.

Dedicated in 1990, and centered over the balcony, is a  Zimbelstern.  The organist simply turns these musical chimes off and on with a switch installed on the console.

The Carillon
Located on top of the church roof (towards the southwest above the choir loft) rests 4 speakers to ring bells to the local neighborhood.  The carillon is located in the balcony located near the organ.

The carillon was purchased on 3/31/67 and dedicated to God's glory on ........

The carillon is a Schulmerich Bells TymeStryke Carillon model 110-TPCC - 30 with serial number 4781.

Handbells

Located in the choir loft is pne octave of White Chapel handbells which is used by our choirs during worship services.

Piano's and Systhesiser.

More information to come.

Choirs
St. John's has two choirs; our Senior (adult) Choir, and our Junior (Sunday School) Choir. Our choirs sing at most services and practice on Wednesday evnings.

Easter Organ Concert with Piano - Sunday April 14, 2002

As part of a mission outreach event, we celebrated the Easter season with an organ concert.  John Hyunil Hong, along with his father, Rev. Eunsung Hong (piano), filled our sanctuary with wonderful music.  Click on the link above to see details of the concert, organ, and program list.

THE GIFT OF MUSIC
Giving God the Best We Can Give

MUSIC is one of the most precious gifts God has given us. One thing special about this gift of music is that we can give it back to God as a gift of thanksgiving.  It is a wonderful way of expressing our faith, and lifting our spirits up to God.  Next to the Word of God and the Sacraments, music is the most important thing in our worship of God.

We always want to give God the best that we can.  God is so good to us!  We want to give Him our best!  Your Pastor and Music Leader and Elders and Church Council have been talking about our music quite a lot lately, and we have some ideas about making it better – the best that we can give to God!  We'd like you to join us in this vision for improving our music ministry.

We're envisioning bringing all of our musical instruments and choirs to the front of the nave, where the piano is now.  We'd like to add a new instrument, a synthesizer, and upgrade our organ.  We also prefer to have our choirs singing downstairs in the front of the congregation, rather than in the balcony; it is very difficult for the director and the choir, if the choir is downstairs and the organ is upstairs.  With the piano downstairs, and the choirs downstairs, it would be very helpful to have the organ there also  -- all the music together. With a piano, organ, and synthesizer in one location, our music-leaders will have new options and possibilities in leading us in our worship of God.

Our congregation is facing an important question for our future.  Are we going to just try to maintain our congregation and keep going as we are?  Or are we going to make a concentrated, faith-filled effort to transform the church into being a growing, full-of-life, missionary church reaching out into our community with God's love and Gospel?   We need to make some changes, with our music ministry among them.  Are we willing to take the risks-of-faith that God is calling us to take?  Money should not be the issue; every-thing we have really belongs to God anyway.  The issue is are we willing to risk and sacrifice and work for the sake of Jesus' mission?

We (your Pastor and Elders) are recommending, as part of this vision,  the purchase a new Allen organ.
This can really be thought of as an upgrade to modern computer technology.  The Allen organ is basically  a computer.  If your personal computer or your company's computer were 20 years old, you would no doubt upgrade to newer technology.  Our Allen organ is over 25 years old.  It is time to upgrade.  The sound of the new Allen organs is more lively and vibrant.  For the organist, with a new organ, there are many more possibilities and functions and variations available to him to bring different interesting sounds into our worship. A new organ may also make it possible for us to offer more musical concerts with outreach to our community.

This past Easter season, The Allen Organ Company graciously loaned St. John's a modern digital organ for use.  We were able to put on a mission event with a wonderful organ concert.  CLICK HERE to view information from the concert and to see pictures of the organ in use.  You can also LISTEN to the organ on this page.  Also contained here is a detailed stop list from the modern digital organ that is available today.

Of Worthy Interest; the orginal organ for St. John's was dedicated on June 5, 1955.  There is no additional information available about this organ at this time.
