ST. PAUL’S/WESTSIDE FOOD PANTRY
228 DAVIS STREET
SYRACUSE, NY 13204

August 14, 2008

Dear Friends;

We are sending this letter to alert all our friends and supporters that St. Paul’s is experiencing some serious problems. The donations we receive, of food and money, have dramatically decreased. We are not receiving the support from the churches that we have in the past. All pantries have experienced a decrease of FEMA funding from the federal government. Also the amount of USDA food that we were receiving has greatly decreased. We annually receive a grant from NYS. This was deposited at the Food Bank July 1st and must be spent by May 30, 2009. We have gone through a third of ours already. Our checking account is rapidly running out.

At the same time we are still trying to serve the families that rely on us. We have had to decrease the amount and types of food we can offer. Without cash we do not have the ability to complete our food packages to provide a nutritious package.
We would like to ask those that donate food to donate basic food items such as peanut butter, jelly, cereal, pasta, sauce, fruits, vegetables, etc., as opposed to cake mixes, cookies. jello and such supplemental items. Also if anyone can budget a monthly donation to help us, it would be appreciated. As always we thank you for your support.

Sincerely,
Judy Eyer
Pantry Co coordinator

Save the Date – May 11, 2009
Save the Date for Monday, May 11 at 6:30 pm. to 8:00 p.m. for the Mother & Daughter Banquet. Our theme for your entertainment will be “Quilting”. Shirley Allen, Karen Fear, Dee Granville and Lesa Wiedemeier will share some of their different types of quilts. On Sunday Service, the day before the banquet, quilts will be on display in the sanctuary for a blessing and will be left up in the sanctuary for us to look at again on Monday if you care to. These beautiful quilts are made by our church quilting group, better known as “Shirley’s Sweat Shop.” If anyone has a special quilt they would like to share, maybe it has a story behind it or sentimental value, we would love for you to bring it in and share that story with us Please let us know in advance if you would like to do this.

We are also looking for a few good men out there to help! It has been a tradition in the past that the men/boys of the congregation serve the ladies that evening and help also with the clean-up. Don’t worry, “NO COOKING IS REQUIRED.” Please contact one of us if you can help, otherwise we’ll hunt you down. (Just kidding...)

On the Menu

Entrée: Chicken Ole (chicken breast, mild salsa & cheddar cheese), Plain Chicken (upon request), Rice Pilaf, Corn and Chef Salad

Dessert: Brownie Sundaes

Just remember this is open to all ladies so bring your sister, best friend, aunt, grandchild, etc.

For all interested people, including pastors, deacons, deacon candidates, Christian Education committee members,  teachers, and others working with children and youth.

Equipping the next generation of saints is a mission of each congregation. Join us for a guided exploration of Christian education issues and possibilities for children and youth in our congregations.  Break out sessions will highlight a variety of options for faith formation.

# 7. Saturday, Apr. 25, 2009, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm ($20, breakfast and lunch included)

“Reading the Prophets,” led by Pr. Gail Wolling, Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, N. Syracuse.

For all interested people, including pastors, deacons, deacon candidates, church school teachers, Bible study leaders.

Reading the prophets can be a challenging task, but diligence is rewarded. Using imagery and metaphor, the prophets speak for God in complex and repetitive forms. Using texts from the Psalms, Jeremiah, Amos and Hosea, we will unravel the language to reveal some amazing ways of speaking to God and about God while enriching our own prayer life.  Read beforehand: Psalm 22, Hosea 1.2-9, Jeremiah 1.4-10, 14-19, Amos 5.18-24, and Hosea 2.

#8. Saturday, May 16, 2009, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm ($20, breakfast and lunch included)

"The Communication Valley - What/How Do You Think?" led by Pr. Diane Wheatley,

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Liverpool.

For all interested people, especially those in any kind of leadership position, such as pastors, council members, and committee chairs.

Different people think and process decisions differently!  That has implications for our communications with God and each other.  It affects communication with God, friends, family, co-workers, and committee partners.  Using the short form of a professional inventory, we will

    * identify and discuss different styles of information processing and decision making

    * share implications for interactions

    * explore strategies for untangling communication problems

    * identify implications for Bible study, preaching, prayer, and spiritual journey.

Be prepared to share, laugh, learn and grow!

Ways to Register

There are three different ways to register:

One. Download and mail check with the registration form found at: http://LearningattheCrossroads.googlepages.com

Two. E-mail LearningattheCrossroads@yahoo.com, giving your full name, postal address, telephone number, and congregational membership, and indicate the #s and titles of the workshops you plan to attend (numbers appear before the dates listed above).  We’ll send back an immediate response to confirm your registration and ask you to write a check to ‘Central Crossroads Conference’ for $20 for each chosen workshop and mail it to: Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 435 S. Main St., N. Syracuse NY 13212.  Checks must be received by the WEDNESDAY BEFORE a workshop at the very latest.. But earlier registration is advised, since space is limited.

Three, No home e-mail?  Have your church send an e-mail on your behalf with your name, your telephone number, and a request to be called at home. Need to cancel a registration?  Call Luther Memorial Church at (315) 458-1481.

If more than 5 people from a congregation attend, the sixth and after pay only $10 each for food. This is equally accomplished, and with least confusion, when a congregation sends in one $50 check and has all congregational participants (including the first 5) pay only $10 each for one’s meals.

Deacon candidates pay only $10 for required workshops.  Candidates will be notified directly regarding such workshops.
