South Shore Brooklyn Conference

The meeting opened at 3:20 with a rereading of this morning’s gospel.

Churches represented were St. Paul’s Ave J, St Paul’s Coney Island, St Steven’s, Church of the Holy Redeemer, and Holy Trinity.

The Lenten services and Easter Vigil were discussed and everyone was pleased. Next year during the 6 weeks of Easter it is hoped to have an Easter Celebration of Praise and Worship. The bands, choirs, and drums of each church will be a part of the service. More planning will follow in the future.

Pulpit exchange was discussed. It was decided to set up a schedule where a rotation of Pastor’s will occur on the 5th Sunday of the month. The months where there is a 5th Sunday in 05 thru Easter 2006 are July, October, January and April. Pastor Zimmermann will set up the schedule.

Discipleship Training was discussed. Pastor von Harten informed us that it is a 12 session series. The sessions will begin in September and will be held one Thursday a month. More information on this project will follow and all the congregations will be informed.

The meeting ended at 4:40 with the Lord’s prayer.

Pastor's Meeting at Holy Trinity

We discussed the potential of opening counseling services on Coney Island at St. Paul's church.  Pastor Zimmermann will meet with some of people of St. Paul's on Thursday, June 10th at 6:30 pm to be followed by evening prayer.

Watch for more to follow.

May 6th, 2004
Pastor's Meeting at Holy Trinity

Conference Pastors met at Holy Trinity to plan for how the conference may best work together to share resources and ministry.  Present as guests were Cecelia Del'Aquila from Wartburg Lutheran Services, Inc. to provide information about setting up parish health ministry.  Cecelia is going to put together a questionnaire to send to our membership for conference-wide needs assessment.  She is on board to help with grant writing and organizing to get the health ministry off the ground.

Rip Hoffman, pastor and mission developer for the MNYS was present to describe and present the Lower Manhattan Ministry, The Community of Hope,  project that he has been called by the Synod Council to serve and establish.  At the present time he is conducting a Bible Study on Wednesdays between 12:10 PM and 12:45PM and Holy Eucharist on Thursdays between 12:10PM and 12:45PM.  Any congregation who has members who work in lower Manhattan may provide the name for contact.  The ministry is in place to serve the weekday population.  Eventually there may be a congregation to serve the lower Manhattan population.

Pastors are to meet every first Thursday of the month for a brief business meeting.  The Pastors will meet on Thursday mornings at 9:30AM for a Pericope study and prayer.  Pastor Harvey von Harten has asked the other pastors to join in praying the Morning Office from For All the Saints every morning, each in their own locations yet together.

The pastors have agreed that we will host quarterly Conference Meetings with some form of worship together.

Conference meeting Minutes
Held at St. James Lutheran Church
January 11, 2004

The meeting of the South Shore Lutheran Conference was opened by Pastor Beth Nebrasky at 1:45 P.M.. The two agenda items Pastor Nebrasky brought to the meeting was the election of a new dean and secretary for the conference and the gathering of a roster of nominees to the synod council since the revised constitution from MNYS calls for delegates to come from the various conferences to insure a greater representation from each area.

Congregations represented were Holy Trinity, St James, St Paul’s Ave J., St. Paul’s Coney Island, St. Steven’s, and Holy Redeemer Lutheran.

Nominations for a dean were called for. Pastor Von Harten nominated Pastor Kipp Zimmermann seconded by Pastor Ken Simurro. No other nominations came forward. Pastor Zimmermann accepted and was named Dean of South Shore Lutheran Conference. Patricia Schanstra was nominated as secretary of South Shore Lutheran Conference by Pat O’Brien seconded by Ed Saunders. No other nominations came forward. Pat Schanstra accepted the position.

The meeting was then turned over to Pastor Zimmermann.

Lenten services were discussed. It was decided to do the services as a conference with each congregation hosting a light supper beginning at 6:30 followed by a service.

bulletMarch 3 Holy Trinity
bulletMarch 10 St James
bulletMarch 17 St. Paul’s Ave. J
bulletMarch 24 St. Steven’s
bulletMarch 31 Holy Redeemer

St. Paul’s Coney Island will host the Easter Vigil service from 7:30 to 9:30 followed by refreshments. All information will be posted on the SSBC web site.

The next order of business was the nomination of Synod Council representatives. Janet Gay was nominated by Pastor Scott Kershner-seconded by Noel Von Harten. Patrick O’Brien was nominated by Pat Schanstra-seconded by Connie Reed. Pastor Nebrasky explained that the nominated representative from our conference will go onto the slate of others nominated from other conferences for election at the June Synod Assembly. A motion was made by Pat Schanstra - seconded by Pastor Simurro and approved by those present to accept the list of nominees and to forward our nominee names to John Litke at MNYS. Each nominee was informed that a picture and bio need to be submitted to MNYS for the Synod Assembly.

Discussion followed about SSBC Health Ministry. St. Paul’s Avenue J will hold a Health Fair on June 5th and St. James will have one on June 12th. St. Paul’s negotiated with the city and was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Dept. of Health and Family Development. However, they have to spend the money first and then will be reimbursed. Pastor Zimmermann would like to hold a depression screening and then organize a support group for those in need. Noel Von Harten of St. Paul’s Coney Island plans to get information on the benefit and necessity of having a Health Care Proxy. A workshop will then be planned. All information from the Health Ministry will be posted on the SSBC web site.

Ed Saunders screens parish constitutions and stated that no congregation in SSBC has fully updated constitutions. You may call him at 718-763-2833 with questions.

Rosina Major, Vivian Presley and Delrose Wildman of Holy Redeemer had two announcements. First, they have gathered over the years videos for training at Leadership Development Conferences and would be glad to share them with others and on March 26th and 27th Holy Redeemer is hosting a revival. The preacher will be the Reverend David Brawley and all are invited to participate with them.

Pastor Ken Simurro moved to close the business meeting seconded by Janet Gay and carried at 3PM followed by the installation of Pastor Zimmermann as SSBC Dean and Patricia Schanstra as SSBC secretary.

Respectfully submitted,

Patricia Schanstra
