A Description of the TLC Symbol
Our identifying symbol, designed in 1983 by artist Sally Beck of Creative Communications for the Parish,
is appropriate for our name, Tierrasanta - which means "holy or blessed land" - and for the faith which we confess.
The Spanish Cross reminds us that the site for our Church Home is located on land that was once part of the first
Mission in California - Mission San Diego de Alcala. Even more important, it boldly proclaims that our faith is
centered in the salvation won for us by Jesus Christ on the cross.
The shell in the center of the cross is a symbol of Baptism, the Sacrament through which we become the Children of God.
The leaves on the branches of the cross represent the New Life which grows out of Baptism, and the arms of the
cross direct us out into service for the community and the world.
The circles symbolize the "holiness and blessedness" of God's redeemed family and also serve as a reminder of
the fellowship circle into which we gather to receive the Lord's Body and Blood in the Eucharist.
Romans 6:4 comes to mind: "By our Baptism we were buried with Christ and shared his death, in order that,
just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a new life!"
